When a child avoids work, adults often jump to one conclusion: laziness.

But avoidance is usually a sign of overwhelm, not attitude.

Executive function challenges can make:

  • starting tasks feel impossible
  • organizing thoughts exhausting
  • decision-making overwhelming

What looks like refusal is often a nervous system saying, “This is too much.”

Instead of labeling behavior, try curiosity:
➡️ “This looks hard right now.”

That single sentence opens the door to support—and helps kids feel seen rather than judged.

Behavior is communication. When we listen, real learning can begin.
